Lane Kiffin May Be Allergic To The Truth

Lane Kiffin came to Tennessee to clean house and he's doing just that; bragging about how he's firing people left and right. Except he doesn't even really have the power to fire anybody.

Kiffin told Sports Illustrated this week that he has fired at least one person and "run off" several others as part of UT's new "get our act together" program. But as anyone who has worked in academics—like say, Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton—could tell you, firing someone at state-run institutions is not that simple.

It seems that Kiffin wanted to fire a football employee recently, but that he "reconsidered" the matter and it didn't happen. (Probably because he couldn't do it.) So why did Kiffin want that guy fired? He made him wait at an airport for 25 minutes.

"I came back and within five minutes I'd fired the guy who was in charge of the guy who'd been sent to pick me up," Kiffin said in the story. "Here's the point: We need to win. That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport."

But that's ludicrous! (How can you not love this guy?) It's also the latest "exaggeration" that Kiffin has been caught in during his brief tenure, suggesting that no matter how much he improves the Volunteer football program, they're not going to be winning any truth-telling contests. For example:

"You can't count the number of people we've run off because they couldn't keep up, and I'm including secretaries," Kiffin said in the story. "They had to go because they weren't going to make it, and they knew it."

Yes, you can count them, because there have only been two. One secretary resigned, and another left to become Phil Fulmer's administrative assistant. Lane really needs to pace himself and save some of that crazy for the season.

Despite what you might read in Sports Illustrated, new Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin hasn't contributed to Knoxville's unemployment rate.

"He has not fired anybody," UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said Thursday afternoon. "If he said he has fired somebody, that's not true. I don't know if he said it from a standpoint of making a point that 'We've got to get this right.' But he didn't fire anybody.

"You can't just fire anybody at Tennessee, particularly when you're talking about non-contract employees. There's a process."

Kiffin said in a Sports Illustrated story this week that one person had been fired and others had been "run off."

Attempts to reach Kiffin were unsuccessful.

Ok forget the fact that this is the SEC and college football is a tough culture down here, but please this guy has no clue. First doesn't know NCAA recruiting rules, now he doesn't know state college hiring and firing rules. This guy is a joke. If he doesn't have the school under NCAA probation, he is going to have the labor board up their tales. Not sure UT can afford the liability the lying POS is exposing them to.

UT reporting Kiffin comment on Brown as secondary violation

Tennessee is reporting another secondary violation involving UT coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin, in a radio interview Friday morning, mentioned recruit Bryce Brown by name and called him “a great player.”

Kiffin's comments came in response to a question about the recent trend of elite players who waiting until after signing day to sign a national letter of intent.

“Once very talented players do things, it becomes the cool thing to do and so the next guy does it and more and more guys do it,” Kiffin said on The Sports Page, the News Sentinel's radio show. “I think what's going to happen is you're going to see... great players like Bryce Brown are doing it now. So now it's going to be more next year and more and more next year.”

It is unclear whether the violation occurred because Kiffin mentioned Brown by name or if it was because he referred to Brown as a “great player.”

NCAA rules prohibit a coach from commenting “generally about the student-athletes' ability” before the prospect has signed a letter of intent.

Tennessee's compliance office reviewed the audio and will submit a self-report to the SEC and NCAA.

The violation does not affect the eligibility of Brown, a running back from East High School in Wichita, Kan., who is the top-rated recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com. Brown, who has yet to sign a letter of intent, is visiting UT this weekend.

Friday's violation is the third self-report UT has filed involving the football program since Lane Kiffin was hired in December.

UT committed two secondary violations during official visit weekends in January, although both have been resolved and UT is not expected to receive additional punishment from either the NCAA or SEC.
