before this i never really knew anyone actually liked michael jackson. he sucks. nothing he has ever done was really that great. i thought only retards and weird germans (yunno, like they apparently love weird american **** like david hasselhof) liked him. yunno, you see those concerts on tv and the audience is crying, those people are retards. and i dont mean that as an insult, i mean i think those folks are genuinely retarded or something, emotionally stunted or something.

dude michael jackson was more than great musically. i agree with you about the people crying and ****, but come on man, dude was musically gifted. he was weird, but i still am not buying the whole pedophile thing, just another example of how gullible people are.

Remember the big tour he did with his brothers around the time of Bad? They released a video from that tour of him performing "Billie Jean", hyped its debut endlessly on MTV. Then they finally showed the thing, and the 4:30 video had about 1 minute of MJ on camera, and the other 3:30 was closeups of teeny-boppers screaming and crying hysterically.

Look, I'll admit I liked MJ through Off The Wall and Thriller. And if you look at videos of him from around that period, I don't see how you can deny his talent, even if you're not a fan. But the ridiculous hype about every move he made along with the accompanying freak show finally turned me off.

MJ was gifted, but really...Since the early 90's, or late '80s, i can't think of a soul that i know who was a fan. He was a only a farce along with the odd media hype.

In my eyes, MJ died about 20 years ago. Although some may not care for his earlier music, to deny his talent and abilities is simply foolish. The guy was nothing short of a phenom in his heyday. He produced revolutionary and timeless music that will be enjoyed for generations to come. The creativity that he demonstrated in his coriography and video production were unparalleled. However, the internal problems caused by his lack of a fulfilling childhood clearly caught up with him by about age 30. He reduced himself to little more than a complete freakshow and the butt of pedophile jokes, and began making very uninspiring music. It is indeed a shame that someone who was so iconic in American culture had become so riddled with such tragic problems, but I suppose it shouldn't come as much of a surprise as that has been the trend over the generations. So his passing didn't sadden or surpsise me that much. For as well-documented as some of his problems were, I feel pretty certain that there are far more that we don't know about yet.

As far as the obsessive fans go, that is incredibly pathetic...not only the ones committing suicide, but also the people who act as though they're witnessing the birth of baby Jesus when they see him perform live. However, MJ was not the first, nor will he be the last artist with fans like that. They're no better than the fans who acted similarly towards The Beatles, Elvis, The Doors, etc. That type of behavior is indicative of a deep-rooted emotional problem, not the epic nature of the music.

i would almost argue that a pop musician that sells lots of records is almost necessarily not that great, but more of a media created fraud. like britney spears or madonna. more publicity than talent, that is what sells.

the same effect is less true with rock bands. zeppelin is part hype, but they are actually good. they play instruments and are good musicians. of course there are still some jonas brothers type bands who will sell huge with no talent.
