If you have a 40" or larger 1080p TV, I think so. The video resolution is something like 6x higher than DVD, and the colors tend to be better as well. If you have a 1080p24 TV, you can watch a Blu-Ray without the subtle cadence problems present in DVDs. The audio is also better than DVD standard; not only does Blu-Ray have new hi-def formats, Blu-Ray discs have core tracks that are maximum bitrate for Dolby Digital and/or DTS. To sum up in one sentence, I would say that the larger your 1080p TV, the more you will appreciate Blu-Ray. The downsides are that Blu-Ray menu systems can be even more ponderous than DVD menu systems, and Blu-Ray discs can take longer to load, particularly if you are foolish enough to enable the Java feature on your player. Oh, and the most irritating thing is that there is no "resume from last position" feature for BD-Live (Java enabled) Blu-Rays.

if you watch alot of movies and have a big 1080p tv then yes. my only complaint about my blu ray player is it wont play any of my pirated movies, and the blu ray dvd's are hella expensive.

Indeed. It will replace DVD eventually. It is better resolution than 1080i HDTV and looks spectacular. Right now the disks are expensive, but they will drop over time as DVD is phased out. The players will, too.

It's like the early days of VHS/Betamax when players cost over $1,000 and tapes were $65. They sold some for a few years . . . then that Christmas happened when there were lots of VHS tapes available, they had become cheaper, and the players dropped below $200 whereupon everyone made the move.

DVD was similar but it happened even faster.

i do have a regular dvd player, but i also have too much stuff hooked up. and my regular dvd player is in the bedroom. its funny that movie mutant chronicles that is about to come to the theaters, i have had a pirated version of that movie for about a year now, and its good quality.

I have a panasonic blue ray player, and I love it, but I really can't tell much of a difference between blue ray disks and DVD's which are up-converted. The audio on the blue ray is better, but i'm not sure its better enough to make up the price difference between the two disks. My guess is that my HDTV only goes up to 1080i resolution on the inputs, but its supposed to up-convert it to 1080p. Either way, it still blows my old dvd player out of the water.

FWIW, I believe that the BDP-S300is last year's model, with the BDP-S350 being this year's. SonyStyle.com was selling the 350 around Black Friday for the same price, or maybe it was $179. In any case, I later bought the BDP-BX1 (same thing as the 350) at Sam's for $199. Unfortunately, neither deal lasted long. Last time I was at Sam's, they had the BX1 for $278 or something like that.

That said, there's usually nothing wrong with last year's model, or even refurbs. Amazon.com often has really good deals on last year's model for a variety of electronics, but you have to catch it at the right time. You could probably find out the difference between the models at places like avsforum.com, where there are often interminable threads devoted to each model.

If you dont have a 1080p display bluray gets you nothing on the video front. If you have a good HT receiver you can still get the lossless audio formats (Dolby TrueHD & DTS Master Audio) but without a 1080p display getting a bluray player is a waste. Also, I have seen a lot of people hook their bluray player to their dispay via component cables and bitch about bluray not looking better than DVD. No chit, component cant pass 1080p folks. You got to use HDMI to get 1080p.

A PS3 is still one of the best bluray players out there. It loads quick and the software is better than most of the players, even Sony's.

I still think it is going to take a lot longer to convert from DVD to bluray. It wont be near as fast as VHS to DVD. When DVD came in the technology was developed and you only had to have a new player. With bluray you need a new display to see the difference in video quality. Everyone isnt going to rush out to buy a new player AND new set for bluray. The phasing out of DVD will be much slower than VHS was.
