Default HBO: The Pacific

Anyone else catch the firs episode of Tom Hanks new WWII mini-series?

I love Band of Brothers. If this is any where near as good as that, this will be another amazing series.

Part 1 was very good and I would say it has Band of Brothers potential.

Sorry...didn't mean to laugh but it's HBO. If it's one of their own shows, they'll show it until you want to vomit.

At least this (unlike most of their programming) is a good show!

I'm sure they'll follow it with Bill Maher who will tell you why the military is bad.

just set your dvr to record series and it will record the one you missed. really good series opener though, Tom Hanks and Spielberg always do WW2 with amazing detail.

So I have been EAGERLY awaiting this series. I have to admit maybe i hyped it up to much. But I was a little disappointed.
Yesterday was Guadalcanal. One of the most vicious battles in the pacific theatre, and the 1st episode about 2 minutes of the actual battle. Now I am not saying I need a series with all battles BUT I expected a little more story around the actual battle and show us what those brave men experienced. My godfather was at Guadalcanal he never talks about it, just lowers his head, he is very old and told me about 5 years ago. We were pretty gung ho when we got there, then the bullets started flying. Then we just tried to stay alive. So I was very eager to see more on that, what they experienced. Just my opinion I guess. .

So anyway, I was a little disappointed to be honest in general. But I think it will be good. But Band of Brothers was excellent at really capturing you. I really think the actual battle on Guadalcanal was an afterthought of this episode..

We will see. I am excited about it, and think they are just setting the characters in this episode. So I look forward to next week.

i think it was just getting cranked up in that 1 episode. I think the majority of this series will focus on Guadal Canal and Peleliu. Give the 1 episode a mulligan for character introduction.

You are probably right, when watching "the making of" I got the impression each episode was about a different campaign. So last night I was like thats it for Guadalcanal?. So maybe I mis-understood. I am still pretty pumped about it, and probably over hyped it a bit at first.

I will watch every episode for sure.

that one battle scene though. Man, i cranked my surround sound, it was sweet. I recently did that for the D Day scene in Saving Private Ryan to wake my family up one morning. It worked.

TT every review that i have read (some of the reviewers have seen the whole series already) has said that the 1st and part of 2 second episodes are a bit slower than the rest of the series. They all say that it kicks into very high gear in the 3rd.

A caveat: While hour one has many fine and distinctive moments, and serves to set up a lot of storylines that will wend through the entire series, it is one of the enterprise’s lesser installments. You’re encouraged to stick with the series at least until hour three, in which we get to know Leckie better as he hooks up with a pretty Australian.

I was a little surprised there was any battle scenes in the 1st episode. Compared to Band of Brothers which didn't have a battle scene until midway through the 2nd episode.

We hit the ground earlier in the Pacific than in the Atlantic despite our professed "Europe First" policy. The bulk of the combat division that fought in Europe trained for three years and did not deploy until the summer of 1944.

Apparently episode 3 get very big...

So I will be quiet and wait until episode 10 to provide my pointless drivel ;-)

This series will be better than Band of Brothers. If you have HBO and you don't watch this, you need to. The Pacific Theater of WWII has been overlooked for quite some time. Most people I know could tell you all about Europe, but mention the Marines in the Pacific and they look at you with blank stares. It's simply amazing, especially given the fact that the war in the Pacific raged on for two and a half years before we even set foot in Europe. It's about time Marines like John Basilone, Chesty Puller, and the like got their due outside of Marine Corps history.

I like the series overall. I have a hard time remembering the characters though as a they look pretty similar, lot of the battle scenes are at night, and everyone is covered in mud. The lead character who looks like the guy from Windtalkers and the short guy who looks like Turtle from Entourage.

Check out Tom Hanks when he was on the Colber Repor talking about the series. He does a pretty good job explaining why more is done on Europe than the Pacific.

i think that guy used to be on Homicide Life on the Streets, around season 6 or 7 he was Falsone i think. Good actor, John Seda.

Last nights episode kicked ass.
