I did not know Williams had changed its nickname. They had always been the "Ephmen" (pronounced eef-men), but within the last few years had changed their name simply to the "Ephs" because the women made a fuss. I guess they couldn't be the Ephwomen. So a century of tradition went down the drain.

Williams big rival is Amherst College who are, of course, the Lord Jeffs.

I know the purple cows are a mascot, but it might be the unoffical mascot, like the war eagle or whatever AU is calling themselves these days.

Actually UC-SB are the Fighting Gauchos.

UC-JC's mascot is the Fighting Banana Slug. If you watch Pulp Fiction Samuel L Jackson is actually wearing some banana slug gear in the scene where they shoot the kid in the head and get hosed down in Tarantino's back yard. God i have to much time on my hands!!

Macon GA used to have a minor league baseball team called the Macon Woopie. I always though that was pretty funny.

For High School, Uncle Gus went to St. Stanislaus, home of the Rockachaws.

In case you don't know what a Rockachaw is, it is one of those little prickly things that sticks to your socks (and other clothing) when you walk through a country field.

Funny story on college nicknames.

A friend (LSUBeav) and I were discussing different college nicknames during the College World Series. While watching Stanford play, he said something to the effect of, "It's pretty damn stupid for a college to pick a color as a nickname."

I told him that a number of schools did this in the 1800's. I believe Harvard was the first school to call itself the "Crimson". Many other schools followed, including Cornell (the Big Red) and one of my alma maters, NYU, which has the nickname "Violets".

He said, "NYU calls itself 'The Violets'?"

I said "Yeah".

Without skipping a beat, Beav responded, "Well are the black students referred to as 'African Violets'?"

I cracked up laughing.

OK OK let a left coaster set y'all straight -

It's the University of California at Santa Cruz that are named the Banana Slugs.

They got the name about 15 years ago by student consensus vote.

Seems they wanted a distinctive name. I'd say they have it.

I swear, banana slugs are DAMNED lucky they aren't indigenous to Looziana because I'll bet some coonies would eat 'em...

About the only time you see 'em in the hills after a good rain... they're pretty easy to spot because they are a somewhat bright yellow and being that they're slugs, they move like...well, a slug...

It's incredible how many announcers throw in the unconscious "s" after Stanford's nickname and they become the "Cardinals"

Stanford became a color by imitating their scholastic & snooty mentors, Hauvad...

...I'm not sure you would insult any political correctness followers with a nickname like that..

...but it sure makes cheering them on pretty bland...

I've always thought of our official nickname was "the Fighting Tigers", coined during the Dietzel era...

Actually, I am in law school in Delaware. Trust me, I give these guys a lot of crap about having a scary chicken as a mascot.
