Channing Crowder and Steven Harris arrested
Football players charged with battery ByJill MartinAlligator Staff Writer Crowder Harris Two UF football players have been charged for battery after an altercation outside a local nightclub hours after the Orange and Blue Game. The State Attorney’s Office filed charges Tuesday against defensive end Steven Harris, 18, and linebacker Channing Crowder, 19. The charge against Harris, a redshirt freshman from Miami, is a felony battery charge. Crowder’s charge is a misdemeanor. Both players were arrested in late April each on a count of aggravated battery in connection with an altercation outside The Palace, 233 W. University Ave., during the early morning hours of April 13. Harris and Crowder were booked at and released from the Alachua County Jail on April 22. UF coach Ron Zook suspended Harris and Crowder after the incident. According to UF sports information director Steven McClain, Zook’s stance on the two players has not changed, saying that the coach will let the legal process run its course before making a decision on the players’ futures.

I believe that's an old arrest Brett. Here's the news on the new one. From the G'ville Sun:
May 17. 2004 6:01AM UF FOOTBALL Police arrest pair of players By ROBBIE ANDREU Sun sports writer Outside the same downtown club where he was accused of an attack a year ago, police say Channing Crowder was part of an altercation. Two University of Florida football players — star linebacker Channing Crowder and starting safety Jarvis Herring — were arrested following a disturbance in downtown Gainesville early Sunday morning. Crowder, a sophomore, was charged with disorderly conduct and Herring, a senior, with resisting without violence. Both are misdemeanor charges. Crowder and Herring could be facing disciplinary action from the university, said head football coach Ron Zook, who talked with Crowder about the incident Sunday night. "I've only heard his side of it," Zook said. "Once the judicial process has run its course, I'll sit down and evaluate the situation." Last season, Zook suspended Crowder from the opening game against San Jose State, stemming from an April 13, 2003, incident outside The Palace nightclub on W. University Avenue, where Crowder was accused of punching and kicking a man on the ground. Crowder pled no contest in June to that incident and served six months of probation. On Sunday, according to a GPD report, Officer Robert Hager was on foot patrol at 2 a.m. when he came across a large crowd in front of The Palace nightclub gathered around two men who were arguing loudly and being separated by friends. Hager said he recognized one of the men as Crowder. According to the report, Hager told Crowder and the other unknown man to leave, and they eventually were escorted in different directions by friends. Crowder, according to police, was crossing University Avenue but stopped in the middle of the street and was holding up traffic as he continued yelling at the other man. Hager said he told Crowder to stop yelling and move to the sidewalk as police made sure the two men went in opposite directions. According to the report, moments later another crowd began forming at the east side of the parking lot, where police said they found Crowder arguing with another unknown black man, with the two men pushing to get at each other. When Hager and Officer J. Annarumma approached, the unknown black man fled and Crowder ran after him yelling. Police said the crowd also followed expecting to see a fight. According to the report, Hager and Annarumma caught up with Crowder and the second unknown black man in the parking lot of the Lotus nightclub a few blocks away. The unknown man ran away. Crowder did the same after he shook free from Annarumma, who fell to the ground trying to apprehend Crowder. As he fled north, Crowder stopped when Hager yelled, "Channing, I know who you are." Police then tried to handcuff Crowder, but he would not comply to the request to put his hands behind his back, police said, adding that Herring tried to interfere with the process and continued to argue with police. According to the report, Crowder and Herring then were arrested and taken to jail. Police said the second unknown black man got away. "We take a very pro-arrest stance with anyone downtown involved in a fight," GPD spokesman Keith Kameg said Sunday. "Crowder was given numerous chances to leave and walk away. Ultimately, we can't have a crowd of 50 to 70 starting or getting into a fight. The officers did exactly what they needed to do. Fighting or causing a fight will not be tolerated." |

Nick Saban was VILIFIED(sp?) on gatorcountry's "swamp gas" when he recruited and signed TimPope. Alot of posters over there dogged Saban badly, saying "he'll take players we never would", "hes always recruited thugs", "how do you think he got plxico Burress when no FL school would take him?"
well, UF, hows this taste? You're best player is a freaking punk thug? Is Zook going to do the right thing and dismiss this player after several run-ins with the law? NO. Saban dismissed Tim Pope for alot less. one incident. Sabans players in four years have had very, very, very few proplems, maybe just the two of them selling their SB tickets. Zook only cares about winning, he isn't going to dismiss his best thug...err... player. UF is turning into Thug U. just like FSU. I live in orlando and the next time I hear a gator fan dog on Saban I'll just laugh it off. After all, there were several articles in bowl season about people commenting on how well behaved ad respectful OUR team was - that comes from the TOP - Saban. OUR team has an all time high GPA. OUR players are being recruited for their character as well as their ability, with Saban giving a chance every now and again, but with a very short leash. And thats only been with Tim Pope and the LB from Miami whose not here yet. Zook, well, apparently it doesn't bother him that his best player on defense is a thug bully who has already hurt one guy badly in a fight. But oh well, he can play. and those guys have the delusional nerve to bad mouth Saban? hypocrites. |
