I'm sure there are thousands. And when I say flop I mean was "HIGHLY" thought of and didn't amount to $HIT. I would love to put J Booty on here but I can't......he didn't meet the "hype" but he wasn't a total flop.
Ones that come to mind: Lester Earl The "Fab Five" running backs Hallman brought in.....all sucked except Toomer...he was OK. Randy Livingston - yes injuries set him back but he never did anything I'll think of more give me yours.

This is not a player yet a head coach. I would have to say in the early 90's in football Curley Hallman. His 4 years as head coach all had loosing seasons.

Who was that RB that we signed a couple of years ago from a small LA HS (I think). ND wanted him real bad but this guy couldn't get in the mix his freshman year and transferred. Who am I thinking of and where is he now (Parquet maybe)?

football: Jermaine Sharpe, rb out of Monroe......Michael Hays, WR out of Opelousas.... and I can't remember his name but the only mistake I think Saban has made in recruiting, and that is that Linebacker out of Florida, I can't recall his name though, but all he did was get into trouble....and another bust from the Dinardo Era was Cecil Collins, RB out of Leesville......all the potential in the world a shame he had the mentaility of a child.
This is kinda off topic: but the biggest recruits to get away from Louisiana before Saban came here... Anthony Thomas RB out of Winnfield Warrick Dunn RB out of Baton Rouge Travis Minor RB out of Baton Rouge Major Applewhite QB out of Baton Rouge Talman Gardner WR out of New Orleans Kerry Watkins WR out of New Orleans I can't think of anymore sure we could name a bunch of those too

Tito Horford has to be in the top ten on any such list. Does anyone remember the SI cover "Dark Days at LSU" with Daddy Dale on the cover? It came out right around the time of the Horford deal (circa 1984). Horford, from what I remember, was a highly recruited star who never played a minute of basketball at LSU. He eventually landed at U. of Miami and never really did much. His recruitment drew the ire of the NCAA, which, I believe, was the impetus (or one of them) behind Dale's quixotic quest against the NCAA.
And, the all time biggest bust at LSU in terms of talent that did not amount to much other than on the Dade County Prison football team ..... Cecil "The Diesel" Collins |

Chris Pettaway in football
A Parade All American offensive lineman from Florida. Big guy. Stayed four years at LSU and never even lettered, much less started. Apparently he was a man among boys in high school, but turned out to be a total disaster when competing with men his own size. Ray Borner in basketball 6-10 center from Australia, a former Australian Rules Football player. Rough on the floor, always fouled out in the first half. He would just hammer people unashamedly and seemed to think American basketball was for sissies, Played one year and went back home. |

Biggest roundball bust in recent years has to be Fess Irvin. Carroll Boudreaux is another HS All-American that never did much. Of course, Dale was coaching them.
In the last few years, Derron Parquet is probably the biggest football bust. He was ranked ahead of Devery Henderson coming out of high school -- he was a 4-star top 20 back. Last I heard, he was sitting on the bench at Univ of Memphis behind a true freshman. |

I thought Tito Horford did play at LSU a year or two....i could be wrong.
TigerLifer, the LB is Tim Pope. You're right, but let me say this in Saban's defense. A friend of mine works for a co. that hired some of the football players last summer.....not to get off the topic but yes they did work. Anyway, he quizzed the players about Saban the team, etc. One question was what is Saban like. The response was all business do it right or you're gone...no second chances. The players said the only exception was Tim Pope...he had like nine lives....before Saban let him go. Why? The players said he was the complete package. Big, fast, strong, hit like a truck, could play the game...nobody liked to have to go against him in practice. Put it this way, they said if Pope would have been straight Bradie would have never moved to ILB, he would have stayed outside and Pope would have patrolled the middle. Saban gave him more than enough rope and he couldn't do anything with it. He was one of the top LBs coming out of Fla but no one would touch him b/c of him being a freak....guess Saban thought he could mold a good person out of crap and get him a good football player in the process.....too bad it didn't work. TL3, on your top guys leaving the state, here's some more: Kordell Stewart Marshall Faulk Reggie Wayne Ike Hilliard Mike Stonebraker (spelling?) The Manning's Any kid out of St Aug

Did LSU recruit Terry Bradshaw back in the day? He was an amazing high school quarterback at Woodlawn (Shreveport). How in the heck did he end up at La Tech?

The legend is that Bradshaw took the ACT three times and couldn't make a 12 which was what he needed to get a scholarship to LSU at the time. Where was a crooked test-monitor when you needed one?

I seam to recall a running back out of St. Martinville, James Jaquet (?), a few years back who showed promise coming out of high school but never amounted to a hill of beans. I also seamed to recall that he was always getting in trouble of some sort..surprise, surprise !

I beleive Cecil Collins could have been one of the best backs in LSU history and maybe even all of college football. He had the tools for greatness but he couldn't keep himself out of trouble.

1.Stan Humphries
Hallman ruined Jermaine Sharp putting a freshman in a no score game right before halftime at A&M and on his first play inside A&M 20 gives the ball on a toss sweep and he fumbled. The rest of his career he was just like that. |

Biggest bust: CURLEY HALLMAN
every year I would hear the recruiting gurus tout this guy's TOP TEN classes. He never won more than 5 games in a season. Some of that talent was legitimate as evidenced by Dinardo, of all people, winning for 3 years with most of his team made up of Curley's boys. Terry Bradshaw did commit to LSU but wanted to back out because his HS teammate, Trey Prather, was 3rd team QB at LSU. He knew he couldn't beat out Prather so he thought he should go elsewhere. He claims that he failed the ACT on purpose to get out of his commitment. If this is true then it was a stupid move because that is were the "Terry is dumb" thing got started. Of course he's made himself a nice career out of "being dumb". Prather eventually left LSU, joined the Marines and died in Viet Nam.

I heard a different version on Terry. The word is; LSU thought Terry was too short to play QB. What about the QB that left North LA and went to Arkie and NFL "Bills". Why did Stan Humpheries(spelling) transfer from LSU? Didn't Herb Tyler win the position over him or was he behind Hodson.

Joe Ferguson (The White Knight) followed Bradshaw and QB'd Woodlawn(SHV) to a State Championship. He then went on to Arkansas and handing the ball off to OJ Simpson in Buffalo.
Your story on TBradshaw could be right. There have been many offered. He also reasoned that he would be more effective in a dropback passing offense than the Sprint Out type attack that Cholly Mac was running. He found the more "wide open" offense at LATech more to his liking. Stan Humphries graduated from Southwood (SHV again, there is a pattern here.) in 1984. (I think) I think he may have beaten Hodson to BR by a year or 2. Thankfully Bert Jones and David Woodley were good North LA. QBs who made the trip to Baton Rouge and stayed.

Recruited Marshall Faulk to play at LSU as a defensive back.

Bradshaw was 6 foot 4. LSU backed off because he was too short to play QB? Yeah, right. And he failed his ACT on purpose so he could go to a division II school? Sure, absolutely. LSU's sprint out attack wasn't suited to him, so he went to Tech? Well, didn't LSU let Bert Jones drop back and pass.
Terry wrote a biography and tried to change history. He isn't the first. He's kind of sensitive that people think he's dumber than a bag of hammers. He's a millionaire Hall-of-Famer with four Super Bowl rings and doesn't need to prove anything, in my opinion. Stan Humphries transferred to Northeast after he was dismissed from the team in a argument with his coach over a team rule violation. I think this was just after his freshman year, he could have been great at LSU, but was immature at the time. |
