None too pleased to have received a newsletter from onepete.com asking for more $$---$3,000 more---as apparently three weeks isn't enough time to get a firm estimate on a billboard in Los Angeles (the $10 estimate was off, it seems).
Baton Rouge, apparently, does not present similar problems to those interested in buying advertisments:
|
Quote:
University of Southern California football fans have apparently struck first in the battle of the billboards.
“We’re in talks with Lamar. We have a spot for a billboard. It will be up in a couple of weeks,” said Kevin Robl, founder of the Web site USCdynasty.com.
The sign will be at the Perkins Road exit on Interstate 10, Robl said. The billboard, in USC’s team colors, bears the message:
The USC Dynasty, 2002-Present. 19 All-Americans, 34 straight wins, 4 BCS bowls, 3 Heisman trophies, 2 national championships, 1 Pete (Carroll, that is).
The billboard is in response to plans by an LSU fan to place a billboard in the Trojans’ backyard signifying national championships for LSU (2003), USC (2004) and Texas (2005), with a heading that will read, “Shouldn’t dynasties win more than one?”
The billboard idea came after Texas ended USC’s 34-game winning streak in the Rose Bowl in this season’s BCS title game. Texas also was voted No. 1 by The Associated Press, ending USC’s two-year reign in that poll.
Before the title game, USC and its fans had been calling for a “three-peat,” riling LSU fans.
LSU won the 2003 BCS national title with its 21-14 victory over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl while USC was awarded the AP trophy that season after its victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
Robl said he was surprised by how angry LSU fans were about sharing the 2003 national title with USC.
USC fans were annoyed at the way the BCS ranked teams, but not at LSU, Robl said of the 2003 rankings that put Oklahoma in the national title game ahead of the Trojans.
“For us, right after the Rose Bowl, we were ranked No. 1 in the AP and (CNNSI.com) polls. And the coaches said they weren’t going to change their votes regardless of who won the Sugar Bowl,” Robl said.
But the coaches were contractually obligated to vote for the winner of the BCS championship bowl, Robl said. USC fans felt their team had won the national championship, and the only reason LSU got to share was because the coaches had to vote for the Tigers.
“I thought they’d think they were lucky to have a piece of it at all,” Robl said.
Robl and other USC fans found out differently when an LSU grad started onepeat.com. The Web site taunted USC for its single BCS trophy, and asked whether a team should have to win more than one BCS trophy to call itself a dynasty.
Onepeat.com has reached a $10,000 fundraising goal, according to the site’s organizers. Onepeat.com has narrowed its billboard site options to two locations near the USC campus, but a final decision has not been made.
Onepeat.com had asked for donations so organizers could raise $10,000 to rent a billboard near USC and set the record straight.
Robl’s Web site taunts LSU fans for begging on the Internet. As a successful, “fat cat USC alum”, USCdynasty.com says, Robl can afford to pay for the billboard himself.
Robl said he’s gotten quite a bit of e-mail since starting the site, but not much that’s printable.
“I wasn’t shocked, but it’s kind of funny to get e-mails like that every day,” he said.
Robl said he was also surprised by LSU fans’ reverence for the BCS’ trophy.
“It’s a crystal football. It’s not like it’s the Stanley Cup,” he said.
The conflict isn’t over.
According to Onepeat.com, its Web site was the target of a distributed denial of service attack. The attack temporarily shut down the site late Tuesday and early Wednesday, but service had been restored by Wednesday evening. Onepeat.com said a USC message board, which is no longer online, was trying to organize just such an attack.

Right. People actually care about the crystal football. Especially those chumps in 2004.

What would someone in Southern Cal know about the Stanley Cup anyway. What a pathetic comparison.

Yeah, just like the NCAA D-I teams were contractually obligated to the Bowl Championship Series as the method to determine National Champions...the obligation they thumbed their noses at in '03, only to wholeheartedly embrace the following year.

So, honestly, how do you 'win' something without playing for it? I'm still waiting on an answer for that.
Yeah, put your little billboard up around here. See how long it lasts.

How long do you think it will be before a bunch of drunken frat boys destroy that billboard?

This is without doubt the lamest comeback USC could give. Instead of coming up with something original, they are giving back a billboard?
Please, this won't get any news. No one cares.
The fact the USC pussies are so upset is what is getting a lot of the news now

They're only saying that because they only have one, just like us.

Hockey...isn't that a bunch of white guys moving around wildly and not scoring much? Kinda like most of your high school proms?

This whole thing is really getting retarded when you think about it. I'll admit, I think the idea is really funny. But I thought it was a joke, not something that would actually happen.
Look, I hated the USC/media bandwagon parade and all that talk of 3-pete...
Many said they were better than us in 2003 with nothing to really back it up. Yes, I do believe it would have been really tough for anyone to beat LSU in the Sugar Bowl that year for the National Championship with the kind of atmosphere and team we had. LSU's defense shut down a great OU team statistically like no one ever did. K. State beat them worse, but they didn't shut down OU's offense like LSU did. And most all of the media said OU would be near impossible to beat coming off of a loss because they were still one of the greatest teams ever. Still, LSU won and it was only remotely close because of 2 totally bogus calls on a successful field goal that would have made it 24-7. And most likely, USC wouldn't have scored much at all against that defense either. But we'll never really know.
But that doesn't matter. LSU was given the crystal football and called "National Champions" that night. USC never got that moment on the field after their game.
And now, IT'S OVER. It's time to LET IT GO and move on. When they lost to Texas I loved it because of all the 3-pete talk, etc. It was an unbelievable game and a great way to end this whole thing. We (LSU fans) got the last laugh because there was no 3-pete to claim. And as soon as the game was over Sportscenter's hosts talked about LSU being champs in 2003 and how everyone should remember that now that USC was not bringing home the title. That was enough for me. Most of the media were probably crying that night.
Yet, we're still dragging this thing on. Are we that insecure as fans? I still see the "FUSC" stickers on cars. Look, I celebrated that night and enjoyed that week like I'm sure most LSU fans did. I too wiped my azzz with a picture of O.J. Simpson that night...but come on. We want to spend thousands of dollars on a billboard that will really do nothing but piss most people in that area off. It's a waste of money that could be used for something good (like finding the "real killer" of O.J.'s wife) . If the billboard was up like a week or so after the game, that would have at least been timely. I think this makes our fans appear small and jealous because we're still thinking about USC. Yeah, I know the message is supposed to be directed at the media, but still...It just makes it look like LSU fans are really bored with life. And we are. Look at me, I'm posting on a message board at 11:00 in the morning, I just confirmed it. Of course, I'm still not bored enough to send my money in for this. I don't have a problem with anyone who does send their money in, but couldn't that money being sent in be used for something better. And yes, I realize any excess money would go to Katrina victims or whatever, but that'll be like $2 if it does exceed the amount.
Additionally, the billboard should read Zero-Pete because according to the NCAA, no one has ever won a national championship in men's Div.I football. They say that they don't name a champion, even though everyone knows that the BCS was created to basically be the NCAA's way of naming one champ without actually admitting it. How about a billboard that says "The NCAA needs to grow a set of balls, stop being pu$$ie$ and name a true national champion in men's football." Now, that everyone could get behind.
If Auburn fans can move on, so can we. I mean, no one got cheated more than them. They didn't even get a share of the title and they went undefeated. It shows how pathetic the AP voters can be. I do believe Auburn could have beaten USC on a really good night. They got the biggest slap of all. Anyway, that's my opinion.
But I do say if the bigger USC moron actually puts up his lame sign first...ahhhhhhh, then what the hell, put the billboard up and on the opposite side of the billboard put a picture of Nick Saban mooning the camera.

I think they should have gotten a firm price before they collected but they did say it would depend on the location and availability of that location once the funds were together. Now that the goal was met they found the location they wanted is more expensive.
BTW...we should go into the sign business. 13 grand for a month is some nice change.

Unless it escalates into an home and home baseball and football package I'm not intrested.

If it ever does escalate into a football series, it may get the highestratings ever for a regular season game. This war is getting a lot of press.

That's the same thing I was thinking. I would donate to have USC come play in Tiger Stadium. After all, I've always heard that LSU vs. USC in 1979 was the loudest game from start to finish in Tiger Stadium history. At least everyone would get an awesome experience in return for their money. Could you imagine how wild it would be if that happened? We need to schedule at least one huge team like that every two years or so since the tickets are going to be so expensive next year for the most part. Div.II teams should never be on our schedule again. Give the fans what they deserve - ENTERTAINMENT.

I would not have any problem with USC if they would be honest and say they won the AP Championship. But to call it The National Championship is about like the winner of the NIT claiming they won the Basketball title.

Or the basketball national title, since that's what the 'N' in 'NIT' stands for.

I have a great solution to all this shenanigans with billboards....give all the money to me and I'll donate it to a worthy cause....my beer drinking fund. You see by donating the monies to me I buy and consume large quantities of beer. This in turn helps helps keep thousands of people employed and our economy strong. After all...my dog is better than your dog!

I agree.
That Auburn team could've given a better game than Choklahoma any day of the week. There was hardly a whisper by the press after the conclusion of the 2004 bowl season.
The rules don't apply to celebrities. So USC can be as hypocritical as they want to be.
