I've seen many posts referring to the Outback Bowl "screwing over" teams from the Western Division. This really isn't true.
How it works is this. 1. SEC Champion goes to Sugar Bowl or BCS Natl Championship. 2. Other BCS Bowls can pick team as an at-large 3. Capital One Picks their team. Must be the team with the next best record, or a team within one game of that record. 4. Outback Bowl and Cotton Bowl get the next 2 picks. The Outback bowl gets first preference on teams from the East. Cotton Bowl gets its first preference on teams in the West. Neither bowl picks before the other one, they both pick at the same time. If either the Outback or Cotton wishes to select a team from the other division, it must wait until the Bowl with that division preference goes. 5. The Peach Bowl then chooses from either division. 6. Music City and Liberty Bowls then rank their teams in order of preference. If they have different teams at the top of their list, the SEC will award each Bowl its team of preference. IF they have the same team, at the top of their list, said team gets to pick which bowl they want to go to. Next team then goes to the other bowl. 7. Independence Bowl then gets their pick of any team left that is Bowl Eligable. (8th team)

Aubie...I'm one of the people you're referring to. I understand the selection order but still disagree with you. The Cotton and Outback do in fact select at the same time and each has preference for their respective division. On occasion, the Cotton has wanted to select from the East allowing the Outback to choose the top team in the West but the Outback wanted nothing to do with that.
According to the selection order you would reasonably expect that the Cotton would "usually" have a team from the West and the Outback would "usually" have a team from the East. There's nothing that says it's a mandate. The law of averages suggests that "occasionally" you would select from the other division. The Cotton has selected Tennessee twice in the last six years. How long has it been since a team from the West went to Tampa?...10 years! They've had their opportunities to select from the West and refused in lieu of a lower rated team from the East. Screw 'em...let 'em rotate on the barbie, mate! (and their steaks suck too!) Hopefully the SEC will send two teams to BCS this year. With one less team to choose from, we'll see how the Capital One, Cotton, and Outback select this year. If Tennesse loses to Arkansas and Florida goes to a BCS bowl, who does the Outback take? Tennesee?, Georgia?, Kentucky?, South Carolina? I bet they'll want AU, LSU, or Arkansas this year. |

Well we were second in the SEC last year and didn't get picked by the Cotton. That means we were wide open for the Outback and they passed us up.

Cottom bowl usually shys away from the west division teams which is why they didn't pick LSU last year. However, the article (based on an interview with some Cotton Bowl suits) quotes the suits many times referring that they know they should've pick LSU last year. And they will be at LSU's final 3 games this year. They proceeded to say that should LSU win out and they don't get BCS At-Large, they will difinately be looking at LSU very hard for the Cotton this year. |

thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realize that, I was posting from what i remeber reading. I didn't realize that they picked those teams last year. You would think they could have picked better teams than Bama and TT, neither one was ranked last year if I remember right.

The Cotton Bowl is great if that is where we end up this year, ther's just something about playing in a Bowl game at night..... I guess it's similar to Sat Nite at Death Valley!!!!

OUTBACK BOWL HISTORY
2006 Florida 2005 Georgia 2004 Florida 2003 Florida 2002 South Carolina 2001 South Carolina 2000 Georgia 1999 Kentucky 1998 Georgia 1997 Alabama (January 1, 1997...seven weeks away from 10 years) As you can see, the last nine teams were from the East and we're only a few weeks away from the 10-year mark since a team from the West was selected. |
