Default Gustav aftermath not expected to affect LSU Troy game

Quote:

BATON ROUGE (AP) -- LSU football players met with coaches at their on-campus practice center, then went ahead with practice under the assumption the that the damage Hurricane Gustav inflicted on Baton Rouge would not be enough to derail their scheduled home game on Saturday.

LSU athletics spokesman Michael Bonnette said Tuesday that the game is still going ahead as scheduled unless they're notified otherwise.

Coming off a 41-13 victory over Appalachian State in a home game moved up to 10 a.m. August 30 so as not to impede evacuations, LSU is now scheduled to play Troy in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

However, Tiger Stadium had some damage, including broken glass and torn awnings over club seats....

C'mon guys...let's do this thing!

I think you posted the wrong link. The video in that one was from before the meeting this evening. Your statement doesn't seem to match up with the link...?

States the vid was released some two hours ago, didn't know if it predated the link you posted. Take it for what it is worth but the link you provided states they are preparing unless otherwise told. No harm committed.

I'd say it's 60-40 with them not playing right now.

Both teams have a common bye and LSU doesn't want a limited practice schedule to interfere with the season.

Limited practice schedule? What do you mean?

Not playing this game will interfere plenty with the season. Our team, namely our QB's, need this game to get ready for AU. I think they would move it to Shreveport before they postponed it.

It just is kinda breaking the routine in that they did not practice Monday. Had a mickey mouse practice today in a roughed up indoor facility.

I just do not know if LSU wants to play a game against a sleeper team like Troy (almost beat them in 2004) (hung with UGA last year) if they not 100% focused on the game.

I also do not buy that LSU wants to play a ton of games before Auburn. A dress rehearsal or two is fine. But they also want as little as possible to be known about Hatch and Lee, also.

Makes sense. I see your point. Call me selfish and over confident...I want them to play.

I just told you the reasons why they wouldn't play.

The reasons why they would, would be:

1. What happens if LSU pushes back Troy and then Ike or something comes later? LSU would have already eaten their bye week/cushion week

2. The extra game to work out some kinks

I do not know what method is best and I support any decision they make. I just am saying that from what I hear, Miles would rather push it back, but Alleva wants to play it.

We will see who wins, I guess.

No can do. They reported this morning there are over 60K people from the hurricane in Shreveport. The hotels are dang near full and the city right now isn't in a position to host BOTH the game and the evacuees. Not saying they won't try to make it work but it's going to be a lot of work to get it done.

Something tells me we could get rid of the evacuees real quick...

Quote:
Background checks lead to 15 evacuee arrests

Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator doesn't mind helping hurricane evacuees -- just not the visiting criminal element.

Everyone who fled Hurricane Gustav had to fill out a brief
questionnaire when they arrived at shelters in the parish. Prator said his deputies then ran background checks on them.

Of the approximately 10,000 people in shelters in Caddo Parish, authorities arrested 15 people wanted on felony charges, including three unregistered sex offenders.

Prator suspects another 1,000 people put false information on the forms. Deputies couldn't find any records -- criminal or otherwise -- in the computers on them, he said...

This game is getting played.

The storm has passed through. We'll get in enough practice time.

What a mess to try and reschedule a game that doesn't need to be rescheduled.

I can't see that happening.

i would think a concern would be things like electricity, clean up, and the ability of the community to handle the game. people coming in for the game needing a place to stay, places to eat, gas, etc.

that is what sounds like it could be an issue. at least as of now.

I think that is the main concern...getting the power back in TS to see what kinda issues come up. From what I understand, TS got hit pretty hard.

Also heard something about concessions...like getting it game ready may be difficult.

It would be foolish to play this game. I've be scouring the net looking at pictures of BR and reading all the online reports and the city is a mess right now. The last thing we need to do is prepare to host 100K people for a game on Saturday when there are so many vital services that need to be restored. I understand wanting to play this game but there is no way the game is more important than restoring infrastructure and necessary public services plus cleaning up one gigantic mess.

I'll be surprised if the game is played. Now...if they moved it to Shreveport, my family just might have to take a wee road trip to Louisiana Saturday night. It's only three hours!

Default Re: Gustav aftermath not expected to affect LSU Troy game

Ive been listening to WJBO's live feed all morning. They had a new conference with the Mayor of Baton Rouge and all the emergency officials. Unless these guys are blowing things out of proportion there is NO WAY this game is getting played and it doesnt need to be played.

All the schools are closed including LSU at least until monday, possibly longer. 75% of the residents dont have power and the best case scenario is 1-8 days for most, 2-4 weeks for others. Gas is spotty at best, supplies are spotty at best, communications are very limited and emergency services like fire and police are operating at above maximum capacity. People have called in with reports of wide spread damage around campus although none of it sounded like serious damage. Just lots of it.

Based on reports, most stores have limited quantity of supplies but they are being replenished quickly. Places like Lowes are reporting 4-5 hour lineups and they are operating with limited staff. Some hospitals are running on generators and gas stations are opening and closing periodically while waiting for tanker trucks. The airport is still operating on emergency power and there are a few flights coming in and out.

The good news is gas is flowing into the area. New ice and supply locations are being announced almost every 30 minutes or so. WJBO is doing a great job of getting the word out to the public about what is open, what has power and where to go for supplies and support.

They have talked quite a bit about the LSU game as well as talking about the Southern game. They haven't said it but by the sounds of it they would be shocked if the game is played.

Lets face facts. All of us in the hurricane path (most of the state) knew there was no way in hell this game would get played. The logistical problems were insurmountable. By the way, the weather here in BB, the weather hasn't improved one bit.
