Stupid question: The paper said they were retiring their jerseys. Is their no.'s retired also, like Cannon's? The reason I asked is some schools retire a players jersey, but allow the numbers to be used.

from the article
Quote:
The retirement of the jerseys of Casanova, McDonald and Macklin comes under a new provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws that says the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007, so the numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

Good decision on Casanova, well deserved! If the internet had been around and I had followed baseball on this site, I could appreciate McDonald more. I don't know that much about him. Macklin I remember, forward as I recall. Played with Dwayne Scales at the other forward, I think. Memory has faded on basketball.

I just hope they don't get carried away like some schools. You go to some schools and see about 20 jerseys retired and you've never heard of any of them. LSU has had only five numbers retired and everybody knows who they are--the best of the best. You can't retire the jersey of those that are merely great, there are too many. You have to pick your superstars only.

Cannon
Pettit
Maravich
Bertman
O'Neal

Jersey is retired, but not the number.
