The absolute most important part about the defense is the defensive line. They basically have 3 jobs.
1) Generate a pass rush, helping out the coverage people. 2) Stopping the run, getting good push up the middle to ruin an offense's timing. 3) Keeping the o line from gettin to the second level, allowing the Linebackers space to make plays and shut down the o Without these jobs being done, a defense will suffer. Disrupting timing is key and no unit does it like a good d line. Currently on our d line is DE's: Chancey Aghayere Chase Clement Pep Levingston Michael Brockers, Bennie Logan, Sam Montgomery, and incoming recruits Ken Adams, Jordan Allen. Analysis: I look for us to be two deep next year at RE and LE. Levingston and Brockers should occupy the LE. Brockers is the big DE that we have missed, like Tyson Jackson and Marcus Spears. Montgomery and Aghayere should be at RE. Supposedly Montgomery should be freaking amazing, and Aghayere played good in limited duty as a true freshmen. Watch for the Chart to look like this LE Levingston Brockers Clement RE Montgomery Aghayere Logan DT's are: Chris Davenport Josh Downs Drake Nevis Dwayne Dailey Dennis Johnson and Lavarr Edwards. Incoming freshmen so far committed are Cassius Marsh and Dexter Blackmon Analysis can go north or south depending on this recruiting class. Marsh must be kept. He needs to be here to provide depth I look for big things from Davenport, but the two keys are Downs and Nevis. They compliment each other very well. Look for them to form a solid tandem. We need depth here flat and simple. Watch for the Chart to look like this DT: Nevis Davenport Marsh DT: Downs Edwards Dailey So in general, our entrie D line should look a little like this on gameday vs North Carolina LE Levingston Brockers Clement DT Downs Edwards Dailey DT Nevis Davenport March RE Montgomery or Aghayere Logan We need this young group to mature over the spring, summer and beginning of fall practices. They are the key to our defense and keeping the offense with a comfortable lead. |

I see Brockers moving inside and Montgomery being the 1st in rotation at DE. Chauncy is the starting RE next year IMO and Ken Adams could also make the rotation at DE later in the year.
We might see Clement get some looks at TE.

I've seen enough of 250 - 260 pound defensive ends to last awhile. They're ok in passing situations but Saban, Nutt and others love to run over them. This is conjecture of course but I like Brockers and Aghayere on the ends. Brockers is 6' 6", 290+ and Aghayere is 6' 4", 270+. We've got a pretty good rotation on the line this year with Nevis, Downs, Davenport and maybe Edwards on the inside and Brockers, Aghayere,
Montgomery, Levingston and maybe Edwards on the outside. Chase Clement too if they don't move him to TE. I really didn't like any of our starters on the D-line last year and I'm looking forward to seeing some new faces this year. |

I dont see Pep starting next year, I with BHelm, I see Chauncey or Edwards on the end opposite of Montgomery.
With Nevis, Downs, and Brockers in the DT rotation with maybe Davenport.

I hear that, Brockers deffiantly has the size and strength and inside speed, so it'll be interesting to see what is done with him this year. The player i look to break out the most though is Montgomery, i really look for big things from him |

Montgomery needs to play. LSU is in dire need of a pass rusher. Personally, I think Pep should get way less PT. He will be a SR though, so we know how that goes. I think Agahayere and Downs show promise but still have a lot of work to do. The DL must improve a lot for LSU to improve as a D. The tackling is something that much be a major focus as well.

Watch out for Pep moving to DT and I am not sure if that would change any plans of keeping Brockers at DE.
I think the starting and 1st rotation DL will be: RE: Sam Montgomery, Michael Brockers DT: Pep Livingston, Josh Downs DT: Drake Nevis (Lock), Chris Davenport LE: Chancey Aghayere (Lock), Lavar Edwards

Dont understand why would the move Edwards to DT, when he was a bright spot at DE. I also considered Chancey and Brockers being the same kind of DE.

You are right. I went by the roster update on lsusports.net where he is listed as a DT but he did nice in his rotation at DE this year. I think Clement will play TE so I will replace him but Edwards will be 2nd on the depth chart somewhere and he can play DT as well at his size.

Regardless, the lines on both side of the ball need Improvements. I know several sacks on JJ were due to him holding on to the ball too long but our un-successful running game was due to our O-Line just not getting the push up front and what we are used to seeing in the past.
On the defensive side, we got NO penetration with our pass rush but did however do a decent job of clogging the holes to stop the run. Our defense made a lot mistakes but the majority of our work this offseason needs to be the focus of how the hell we can move the football offensively and getting back to blowing out opponents for ALL 4 Quarters, rather than playing down to them. |

Geauxtigers45, now that we have solved our D-line problems are you going to start a thread on the O-Line so we can solve that before Spring training starts?

I think we will see Adams and Egeaux high on the depth chart at DE.

I had thoughts of moving Ego to DT eventually, isn't he already 260? I'd think one of the two between him and Copeland would be a candidate to switch inside down the road.
As for Bennie Logan moving inside, wasn't he only like 235-240 when he signed? Could be wrong but I didn't think he was a huge guy, relatively speaking of course.

Copeland is all DT and at 277 right now but he said 280 the day before yesterday on a radio interview. Their has been some rumors that Logan is moving to DT but I am not really sure if that is the case. THe same could be said about Davenport moving to OL it could happen but I don't think it has been determined yet but could be an option. I see Jordan Allen staying at DE as well but he could be a candidate for OL depending on how much weight he gains.

I don't know about ya'll but i am really interested in seeing what Chancey Aghayere can do. It seems like everytime he was in the game he made something happen.
