My take LSU by far, and for me here is one of the biggest differences; Saints fans are/were just happy to be in the Super Bowl, win or lose; LSU fans would have expected the Tigers to win a game of that magniture, the MNC.

To me, LSU is bigger. Mobile is a Saints town, and I would wager that 90% of football fans that grew up here are Saints fans. As such, I've been a Saints fan all my life. I only became an LSU fan 11 years ago at 18, when I decided to attend. Still, that is a connection that I don't have to the Saints. I feel like LSU is MY school, and not just my team. I lived there, I learned there, and I did a lot of growing up there. Don't get me wrong, I was in my black and gold last night, and I am very proud of the team (and probably celebrated a little too much for a work night). It just isn't quite the same.
The original question was about Louisiana, but that's my take.

Yep. It's NOT all about New Orleans. PS LSU won't EVER move. The Saints almost did 4 years ago. This from a 43 year Saints fan. LSU has been playing football since 1893, the Saints since 1967. That's parents, grandparents, great-grandparents as fans. Plus LSU has won all three of their NCs in New Orleans.

too close to call. no real split loyalties like in other states. an unknown % dont like lsu because of resentment and/or other schools (tulane, ull) and and unknown % dont like the saints (north and west LA)
i wonder if our situation is like wisconsin or other states (minn, colo) where there is only one nfl team and one major college team. the difference with wisconsin is that GB has had success throughout and is not in a metro area.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/attendance/_/year/2009 The Saints fanbase has always been known as an "off and on" kind of thing, even Saints fans on this board have said this in this very thread. Not saying it wasn't justified due the years of suffering, just that it was there up until this year (gee, what a coincidence). Now that there's a SB victory to point to, I'm sure people will continue to support the team, but don't act like there weren't lean years and times of waning fan support. If you are, you're being delusional and/or a revisionist. The team has threatened to leave New Orleans at least 3 times. This is an undeniable fact. The team struggled to sell out PLAYOFF GAMES as recently as 7 years ago. Please get back to me when you stop being delusional.

perhaps katrina changed the way people felt/feel about the saints. seeme to me that the saints, maybe more than anything else became/has become a symbol of hope.

Well, you could intelligently debate my points, which were not inflammatory in any way, but that would be too "grown up" for me to understand I suppose....

the saints are the prodigal son. no matter how bad saints fans are treated they keep welcoming the team back. it was a totally devoted committed, one sided relationship. as far as leaving the city, i'm pretty sure that's an owner thing not a fans or a team thing. if the saints would have left at any time during their existence, it would have crushed the city. take away companies buying tickets and put them in what has to be one of the lowest NFL cities for mean income and see how other franchises do selling out games. and when i say 75% full i don't mean for the whole season, everyone shows up when their team still has a chance. i'm not trying to argue numbers anyway, if i was, i would've looked them up. i'm trying to argue the fact that the detractors make it sound like saints fans didn't exist before 2006, and that, is delusional.

This is kind of a stupid argument because both the Saints and LSU are Louisiana's to love. I dont think there is any question state wide that LSU is much bigger. The question about New Orleans is debatable but not worth arguing over. Both have big fan bases in New Orleans.

Those are the same traits Saints fans have. If you dont believe it you've never lived in New Orleans a day in your life. If you havent lived in New Orleans you really cant speak on the subject. It clearly has the highest concentration of Saints fans and the best place to measure the traits of their fans. They are just as dedicated as LSU fans because many of them are the same people.

Go to a Giants or Jets game in New York and then listen to their sports radio talk shows and get back to me on that. They are just as fanatical as college fans and maybe even more.

I travel all over the country and I find pro fans just as passionate, and in some cases more passionate, then college fans. In the Souths bubble that is generally not the case but get outside the south and the opposite is true.

I found that out first hand when my first night in New York City (where I just moved) was the night of the NCG. I had to ask for the Alabama-Texas game to be put on at a sports bar, over the Knicks game everyone was watching. In the southeast, college football will always be king. The Georgia Bulldogs will always rule that area over the Falcons, the Gators/Noles take supremacy over the Bucs, etc. But all that they have up north is Rutgers, Syracuse (haha) and a few Penn St. fans. So in a way, they live for the Giants/Jets like we live for Saturdays in Tiger Stadium. It's all there is.
