EL PASO, Texas -- LSU's Trindon Holliday scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to help his Texas all-star team beat The Nation's squad 36-17 on Saturday.
Holliday, a 5-foot-5 running back, scored first on a 67-yard pass from Ryan Perrilloux, a Jackson State senior quarterback, with 10:46 left in the third quarter. Holliday's second trip to the end zone came about 5 minutes later on a 2-yard run.
Holliday, who is known more for his speed than his size, totaled 209 all-purpose yards, including 71 on four punt returns, to earn offensive player of the game honors.
"I knew that no one could catch me once I get a step off," Holliday said.
The NFL hopeful, who has so far foregone what looks to be a lucrative professional track career, said he wants "to give this football thing a go" before dedicating himself full time to track.
After a scoreless first quarter, UTEP cornerback Cornelius Brown gave Texas a 10-0 lead with a 35-yard touchdown return off a fumble recovery with about 9:40 left in the first half.
"I wanted to give the fans something to cheer about before this game and I did," said Brown, who was selected the game's most valuable player. "It rolled right back to me and I saw green and took off."
Perrilloux, who shared his duties under center with quarterbacks from Troy and Duke, threw for 136 yards in the win.

Not so much, but I was wondering if he had scored on plays he ran at LSU, ones he might have been more familiar with, or if the coaches he played under in this game, may have used him differently?

The problem is Crowton telegraphs everything, after 2007 every DC in the country had seen what LSU was doing, they are designing specific plays for specific players, the problem is everyone can see what is going to be called when specific player comes in.

When Holiday got in the game he got the ball 90% of the time, if he was in motion than it's a sweep play. The only time Holiday didn't get the ball when he was in was a few option plays where Shepard kept the ball and had a few good gains.

I think it is a possibility that there was more talent on the team than Crowton knew what to do with. And I guess that is why this Gonzales guy was brought in. I believe Gonzales will be expected to bring in some new wrinkles to the offense and concentrate on the plays put together for the "athletes" on the team. I think he will be the brains behind putting a package of plays together specifically for Russell Sheppard.

Kind of wish they could have done that with Trindon.

He had 4 rushes for 12 yards, a 67 yard reception TD, and 137 return yards. It isn't as if he had a bunch of carries averaging 10 YPC.

That's the problem. Everyone knows what you plan on doing, you can get away with it for a year, that year ran out in 2007.

Building an offense which is made up of specific plays for specific players is an epic disaster in the making. This is what got LSU to this stage, or more like a large portion of why LSU is at this stage.

Eventually you have to have a QB that can drop back and pass, and you need a RB that can do a screen, a draw, a sweep, take a pitch, block, etc. GC tries to trick the other team but all he is doing is telegraphing the play.

I wouldnt have expected Trindon to get 10 yards a carry. The return yards I would have expected. I was just curious as to if they used him in a different manner than what we saw of him at LSU. And looking at the stats that were given, as I did not see the game, they probably did stick to what he was comfortable with.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I would like to believe part of the diversity in the offense will include getting more playmakers the ball in different ways. This guy Gonzales from Florida has to have some experience with that, considering who he coached with and the athletes he helped to coach. I think he is going to be helping to incorporate more spread plays into the offense, similar but not identical to Florida's. I think Gonzales and Crowton will work together to diversify the offense more and there should be improvement there next season. The offense should be less predictable and opponents will have to compensate for more playmakers on the field at one time.
